Iceland is one of those places that’s magnificent in all seasons. Arresting beauty will delight you from every angle, whether you’re riding an Icelandic horse across a black sand beach or soaking in geothermal waters under the midnight sun. Waterfalls pierced by rainbows, wild Icelandic horses set against magnificent cliffs, black sand swirling into big blue glaciers — Iceland is a photographer’s dream and heaven for adrenaline junkies, as well as for design lovers and luxury seekers. Below are just a few of our favorite ways to enjoy Iceland in both summer and winter (because we’re sure you’ll want to experience both!). Whether it’s a wild picnic set up al fresco at the edge of a glacier, exploring the inside of a lava cave on foot, or an adventure traversing glaciers to chase the northern lights, we’ll make your wildest fantasies come alive in magical Iceland.
1. When Is the Best Time to Visit Iceland?
Iceland is a year-round destination, though the season may determine some of your activities. The best time to see the northern lights is during the darker, shorter days from the end of September through April. In December you’ll see very little daylight, whereas at the height of summer the “midnight sun” never actually sets. Spring and summer are best for whale watching.
That flexibility sets Iceland apart from much of the Arctic. Many lodges in Alaska and northern Canada close in the winter (December to March), while Iceland changes dramatically with the season. That is exactly why we design each journey around when you travel and what you want to experience.
2. What Can You Do in Iceland in Summer?
In summer, take advantage of the midnight sun and seemingly endless daylight to explore well into the evening. Long days leave room to cover more ground, and some of Iceland’s most dramatic scenery is best seen from the air.
A Bird’s Eye View
Soar over Iceland’s lava fields, volcanoes and black sand beaches to go heli-rafting, glacier hiking, or heli-biking in remote canyons and valleys only accessible by helicopter. The jagged peaks, dramatic waterfalls and other natural formations that make up Iceland’s moon-like expanses are a wonder to behold, especially from above.
A Therapeutic Soak
Escape to hidden geothermal lagoons and rejuvenate in natural healing waters as you take in your breathtaking, peaceful surroundings. The warm embrace of these secret, secluded hot springs will transport your body and mind to a place of utter relaxation, better than any spa you’ve been to.
Silfra Fissure
Glide effortlessly in the surreal underworld of the Silfra Fissure, where crystal clear water fills the divide between the European and American continental plates, kept apart by powerful geological forces. Led by skilled and experienced divers, this is a snorkeling trip unlike any other on the planet.
The warmer months also bring Iceland’s marine life closer to shore, so summer is an ideal time to head out on the water in search of whales. From May through October, you can also descend with an expert guide into the magma chamber of a dormant volcano.
3. What Can You Do in Iceland in Winter?
Come winter, head out after dark in search of the northern lights. The landscape turns to snow and ice, and the long nights become the main event.
Bespoke Northern Lights
We’ll whisk you far away from civilization and light pollution to viewpoints where you’ll have the best possible chance to witness the magic of the elusive aurora borealis. Watch celestial magic dance across the sky from the deck of a luxurious boat, from the soothing waters of a private lagoon, or through floor-to-ceiling windows from your private villa.
Glacier Snowmobiling
Vast glaciers are your personal playground on a privately guided snowmobiling expedition, where you’ll carve your own path across the icy expanses of Iceland’s famously dazzling remote landscapes. The thrilling experience of flying through the glittering snow toward the horizon is best capped off with a private picnic or a glass of whiskey in front of a crackling fire.
Explore Crystal Blue Ice Caves
Experience the thrill of walking through a natural ice cave, one of the natural wonders formed in the heart of glaciers during winter. The mesmerizing sapphire hues of the crystal-like formations will wow you with every step.
A Polar Plunge
Take a deep breath before you dive into pure Arctic water just above freezing and receive a shock to the system in the best and most rejuvenating way. A polar plunge is one of those things you’ll be happy you did, though it’s probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
4. What Iceland Experiences Can You Enjoy Year-Round?
Iceland’s picture-perfect wonders are famous for a reason, and many of them shine in any season. Take a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon surrounded by moss-covered lava fields. Feel the power of the Strokkur Geyser from just a short distance away.
Traveling by Super Jeep or helicopter allows for more flexible routes off the tourist track, and we have a network of excellent guides who will take you to the best hidden ice caves, secret geothermal lagoons, and lesser-known waterfalls away from the crowds.
Climb a Glacier with a Climate Scientist
For something deeper, The Legacy Untold can arrange for you to climb a glacier alongside a climate scientist, learning firsthand how Iceland’s ice is retreating beneath your feet. It is one of our exclusive offerings, designed to inspire awareness and action to support a healthy future for the planet.
5. Where Should You Stay in Iceland?
Fine dining, immaculate spas, and cozy fireplaces welcome you back after a day of adventures exploring glaciers, waterfalls and lagoons. Iceland’s luxury hotels were designed to take advantage of their miraculous surroundings — fall out your door into a private corner of the Blue Lagoon, or watch the magical northern lights paint the sky from your private suite.
The Reykjavik EDITION
The Reykjavik EDITION puts you in the heart of Iceland’s capital, with the country’s glaciers, waterfalls, geothermal landscapes, and black sand wilderness waiting beyond the city. It makes an ideal base for travelers who want to combine the country’s untamed landscapes with the restaurants, design, and energy of Reykjavik.

6. Can You See Iceland in a Long Weekend?
Just a 5½-hour direct flight from New York City, Iceland is close enough for a long weekend yet its dramatic landscapes and high-octane adventures make it feel a world away. The country is full of hidden thermal baths, sky-high waterfalls, and amazing geysers, and all of these wonders are within driving distance of cosmopolitan Reykjavik. Basing yourself in the capital allows you to jet in and out seamlessly while still exploring Iceland’s wild side. If you can stay longer, a circuit on the coastal Ring Road allows for a slower-paced journey and getting off the beaten path.

“I’m not a super spiritual person, but I had many quiet moments during our time in Iceland where I just stood in awe of its beauty. It made me emotional frequently and I vocalized my gratitude to the universe on several occasions. When The Legacy Untold says they curate experiences, that is an understatement. Your team planned an experience that deeply moved me and my husband and we are forever changed. Maybe you could say you help curate happy souls.” — Erin C., Las Vegas, NV
